The theme of this year's Usable Transatlantic Idea Competition is "Mover wanted! Civic Engagement of Generation 50+". A total of €120,000 in prize money is to be awarded. The awaerd ceremony will take place in Hamburg on 25th June 2010.

The big response of a total number of 238 applicants is excellent. Total numbers and quality of the submissions demonstrate the high civic commitment of generation 50+. The submissions impress with a broad range of civic engagement: projects and initiatives of dance, theatre, self-help, cross-generational living, sports, foster grandparent services are among them, to mention only a few.

The great tradition of civic engagement in the US and Canada have once again inspired many applicants. Example initiatives from the U.S. and Canada can be found here. The competition traditionally targets initiatives that are oriented towards a philosophy of American public spirit, and perhaps even follow a concrete example from the U.S. or Canada. By now though it is also clear that civic engagement in Germany gets more and more entrepreneurial, self-confident and independent even without American examples.
