Dr. William Richard Smyser

is a professor of European politics, German politics and economics at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Before becoming a university professor, he was actively involved in international politics as an Assistant Secretary of State in Washington, D.C., and as a political envoy to the U.S. Embassy in Germany. William Richard Smyser served for several years as the United Nations Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees. He continues to devote much time and energy to transatlantic and humanitarian issues.
