Paul Quinn-Judge, Central Asia Project Director at the International Crisis Group, discussed with the members of Körber Network Foreign Policy the current situation in Kyrgystan in the aftermath of the parliamentary elections on October 10, 2010. A special focus was placed on the question to what extent the fragile situation in Kyrgystan affects the other Central Asian countries and what regional and international actors should do to stabilize Kyrgyzstan.

In his opening statement Quinn-Judge maintained that the international community needed to do more than it has done hitherto to effectuate an enduring stabilization of the crisis-ridden countries in Central Asia. Quinn-Judge voiced the opinion that China was becoming more influential, whereas Russia’s influence in the region was on the wane and gradually declining.

The ensuing discussion centred on the prospects for the stabilization of the region, and on recommendations for action. There was some disagreement about whether and to what extent the international community should attach conditions to its supportive measures.

With this event, the Körber Network Foreign Policy continues focusing on current questions of foreign and security policy.
