With high-ranking speakers and participants, the Munich Security Conference and Körber Foundation jointly held the First Munich Young Leaders Round Table on Security Policy from February 5 to 8, 2009.
Sunday, February 8, 2009, Discussion with Radoslaw Sikorski
The meeting of the Munich Young Leaders with Radoslaw Sikorski, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland, concluded the First Munich Young Leaders Round Table on Security Policy. Participants discussed EU-Russia relations and possible options for action. The discussion also touched upon the question which lessons the EU should learn from last year’s Georgia crisis and how the Union should deal with its Eastern neighbors.

At an “early bird-breakfast” with the Munich Young Leaders on Saturday morning, Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, elaborated on current challenges for Pakistani foreign and security policy. Pakistan’s fight against militant fundamentalists as well as its relations to India and Afghanistan were at the center of the discussion.

David Miliband, Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs of the United Kingdom, focused on "International Security in a Globalized World" in his "nightcap" speech at the Munich Young Leaders Round Table on Security Policy. The discussion centered on questions of nuclear non-proliferation as well as on the Iranian nuclear program.

During a luncheon on Friday, the Vice President of the Federal Intelligence Service for Political Affairs, Dr. Arndt Freiherr Freytag von Loringhoven, discussed with the Munich Young Leaders “Counterterrorism – a perspective from the German Intelligence Community”. Topics during the discussion were lessons learned from the US “War on Terror” as well as the cooperation among the national intelligence services in the field of counterterrorism.

Cem Özdemir, Federal Chairman of Alliance ‘90/The Greens and Member of the European Parliament, and Alexander Graf Lambsdorff, Deputy Chairman of the FDP Group in the European Parliament, discussed future perspectives of European foreign and security policy with the Munich Young Leaders. The discussion focused on the success of EU crisis management as well as on possible steps towards enhancing the EU capacity as a foreign and security policy actor.

Thursday, February 5, 2009, Welcome Dinner
The First Munich Young Leaders Round Table on Security Policy was opened by Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger, Chairman of the Munich Security Conference, and Dr. Klaus Wehmeier, Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board of the Körber Foundation on Thursday evening. In his dinner speech, Ambassador Ischinger gave a vivid account of his experiences in multilateral negotiations.
