Munich Young Leaders 2010
In the second year of the Munich Young Leaders, the Munich Security Conference and the Körber Foundation again will bring together a high-ranking group of speakers and participants in Munich from February 4 to 7, 2010.
Sunday, February 7, 2010, Discussion with Dr. Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg
The meeting of the Munich Young Leaders with Dr. Karl-Theodor Freiherr zu Guttenberg, German Minister of Defense, concluded the Second Munich Young Leaders Round Table on Security Policy. Dr. zu Guttenberg spoke about chances and challenges with regard to Bundeswehr missions abroad. The discussion focused on the question to what extent Germany should be militarily engaged abroad in the future.

Sunday, February 7, 2010, Discussion with Prof. Igor Yurgens
An "early bird-breakfast" on Sunday morning with Professor Igor Yurgens, Vice President of the Moscow-based investment bank Renaissance Capital and Chairman of the Board of the Institute of Contemporary Development, one of Russia’s leading think-tanks, marked the beginning of the final day of the Second Munich Young Leaders Round Table. Professor Yurgens talked about the impact of the global financial crisis on the BRIC states. He illustrated cornerstones of a new political and economic global order.

Saturday, February 6, 2010, Discussion with Admiral James G. Stavridis
Admiral James G. Stavridis, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) and Commander of the United States European Command, met with the Munich Young Leaders and discussed NATO’s Comprehensive Approach. Using the example of NATO’s ISAF mission in Afghanistan, Admiral Stavridis explained advantages as well as limitations of the Comprehensive Approach.

The discussion focused on perspectives for Saudi-Arabia’s future engagement and opportunities for cooperation with international partners.

Friday, February 5, Discussion with Helga Maria Schmid
Helga Maria Schmid, Director of the Policy Planning and Early Warning Unit of the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union, discussed with the Munich Young Leaders the implications of the Lisbon Treaty for European foreign and security policy. The discussion also focused on the question in how far the institutional innovations stipulated by “Lisbon” increase the EU’s capacity to cope with current foreign and security policy challenges.

The Second Munich Young Leaders Round Table on Security Policy was opened by Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger, Chairman of the Munich Security Conference, and Dr. Klaus Wehmeier, Vice Chairman of the Executive Board of Körber Foundation, on Thursday evening. In his dinner speech, Ambassador Ischinger gave a vivid account of his experiences as Chairman of the Munich Security Conference and a forecast of upcoming activities.
