Admiral James G. Stavridis, Commander of the United States European Command (EUCOM) and NATO Supreme Allied Commander, Europe explained during an afternoon session the significance and necessity of a network approach to security policy. He declared that one could only deal successfully with international security policy conflicts if challenges such as those currently seen in Afghanistan were met in a comprehensive manner. He went on to talk about the future of NATO and the launch of the New Strategic Concept. The alliance, he thought, had made good progress, both politically and in the area of transformation, but could be focused even more precisely with the help of the new concept in order to address the threats and risks of the 21st century. He asked the participants to have open minds about new dangers and topics such as cyber attacks and energy security.

This report was written by Munich Young Leader Dr. Benedikta Freiin von Seherr-Thoss, Policy Planning and Advisory Staff, Federal Ministry of Defence.
