For the third time, young leaders in the field of foreign and security policy from more than 15 nations participated in the Round Table of the Munich Young Leaders. In February 2011, the Munich Security Conference and Körber Foundation jointly held the Munich Young Leaders 2011, the network for young leaders in foreign and security policy.
Sunday, February 6, 2011, Discussion with Alexander Grushko
The meeting of the Munich Young Leaders with Alexander Grushko, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, concluded the third Munich Young Leaders Round Table on Security Policy. Alexander Grushko wrapped up the results of the 47th Munich Security Conference from a Russian perspective and provided a prospect for future challenges and chances of the Russian foreign and security policy.

In their discussion with the French Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Michèle Alliot-Marie, the Munich Young Leaders talked about the future of European security and defence policy. The discussion focused on what kind of concrete commitments the EU member states would have to enter in, in order to improve their ability to act and communicate in conflict situation.

Saturday afternoon Günther Oettinger, EU-Commissioner for Energy, met the Munich Young Leaders to discuss how to guarantee energy security in the EU. The participants were in complete agreement that, in order to assure a sustainable EU energy supply, a coordinated European energy policy is needed.

In their discussion with the Munich Young Leaders, US Senators John McCain and Joseph Lieberman elaborated on current priorities of US foreign and security policy. The discussion focused on the current events in Egypt and on its implications for the Middle East and the Gulf region.

George Soros, Chairman of the Soros Fund Management and the Open Society Institute, discussed with the Munich Young Leaders the changing political and economic role of China. The participants focused on the consequences for the economic and security policy of the EU.

The kick-off-meeting of the second conference day of the Munich Young Leaders Round Table on Security Policy was held by Japan’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Takeaki Matsumoto. In the ensuing discussion, the participants talked about the security situation in East Asia as well as the current priorities and perspectives of the security policy in Japan.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia, Vuk Jeremić, met the Munich Young Leaders Friday evening to discuss perspectives and options to promote security and stability in the Western Balkans. The discussion focused on Serbia’s contribution to stabilize the region and the current state of the EU-Serbia relations.

During the meeting with the German Federal Minister for Finance, Wolfgang Schäuble, the Munich Young Leaders discussed the stability and future of the European Monetary Union. Apart from analyzing stabilizing mechanisms and crisis management tools for the euro zone they also elaborated chances and obstacles of a greater coordination of the economic and fiscal policy of the euro countries.

During a luncheon on Friday, Joseph S. Nye Jr., University Distinguished Service Professor at Harvard University, discussed with the Munich Young Leaders the future of U.S.-China relations. The discussion focused on the question what role Washington and Beijing will play in this currently changing geopolitical order.

Friday forenoon was completed by Toomas Hendrik Ilves, President of the Republic of Estonia, and his assessment of the development of Cyber Conflicts. In the ensuing discussion the Munich Young Leaders took a closer look on the security of the internet and the threats posed by Cyber Terrorists. Together with the President they discussed the effectiveness of possible measures against Cyber Attacks.

Thomas Enders, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Airbus S.A.S., talked on Friday with the Munich Young Leaders about the challenges strategic industries with reference to security policy are facing in a globalized world. Moreover, they discussed the effect of the financial crisis on the aerospace industry.

A meeting with Teo Chee Hean, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence of the Republic of Singapore, marked the beginning of the first official conference day of the third Munich Young Leaders Round Table on Security Policy. Minister Teo talked about the challenges and perspectives of the regional security in Southeast Asia and discussed with the Munich Young Leaders how to maintain peace and stability in the region.
Thursday, February 3, 2011, Welcome Dinner with Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger
The third Munich Young Leaders Round Table on Security Policy was opened by Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger, Chairman of the Munich Security Conference, and Klaus Wehmeier, Vice Chairman of the Executive Board of Körber Foundation, with a welcome dinner. In his dinner speech, Ambassador Ischinger spoke about the future of diplomacy and the role of the Munich Security Conference and gave a vivid account of his experiences as Chairman of the conference.
