Berlin, January 20, 2009

Daoud Sultanzoy, Member of the Afghan National Assembly, discussed the situation of Afghanistan in the run-up to the upcoming presidential elections with Members of the German Bundestag, the Federal Foreign Office, the office of the Federal President, the Federal Ministry of Defence, the Federal Intelligence Service and selected thinks tanks. The discussion also focused on the Afghan assessment of the NATO-led ISAF mission and ”Operation Enduring Freedom” under US command as well as on Afghan politicians’ expectations vis-à-vis Germany and the new US administration.

The Background Discussion with Daoud Sultanzoy continues Körber Foundation’s dialogue with Afghan politicians. Previous guests at Political Breakfasts and Background Discussions included Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, Secretary General of the Ahmad Shah Massoud Foundation and former Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, as well as Dr. Rangin Dadfar Spanta, Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.

The Körber Foundation regularly invites a small circle of high-level foreign policy players to its Background Discussions. As with the Bergedorf Round Table, the discussions take place confidentially and away from public attention.
