141st BERGEDORF ROUND TABLE

Russia’s Responsibility in Global Affairs

Moscow (October 24-26, 2008)

As an independent and self-confident player and a permanent member of the UN Security Council, Russia bears great responsibility in international politics. The Bergedorf Round Table in Moscow addressed objectives, interests and values of Russian foreign policy and dealt with the security policy perspectives in Europe and in the Middle East.

How can differing ideas on European security be reconciled and how should the future security policy architecture of Europe be designed? What contribution can Russia make, together with her international partners, towards fostering stability in the Middle East?

Chaired by former German President Richard von Weizsäcker and moderated by Alexander Rahr, German Council on Foreign Relations, politicians and experts from Russia, Germany, selected countries from the EU and the USA discussed at the 141st Bergedorf Round Table in Moscow their respective expectations and opportunities for cooperation.

The results of the confidential deliberations had been edited and documented in the 141st Bergedorf Protocol, which is published by the edition Körber-Stiftung.

The 141st Bergedorf Round Table continues Körber Foundation’s long tradition of dialogue with Russia.

The edition Körber-Stiftung has published an essay on German policy towards Russia by Eckart von Klaeden, foreign policy spokesman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group at the German Bundestag, under the title "Kein Sonderzug nach Moskau. Deutsche Russlandpolitik muss europäisch sein" in October 2008. See also Eckart von Klaeden’s article in the German journal "DER SPIEGEL" which has been published on August 25, 2008.

In the past there have been numerous events focusing on Russia, lastly the 131st Bergedorf Round Table on "Russia and the West" (Potsdam, 2005) and the Political Background Discussions with Dmitry Rogozin, Permanent Envoy of the Russian Federation to NATO, Vladimir Chizhov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the EU, Mikhail Margelov, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, and Konstantin Kosachev, Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs of the State Duma of the Russian Federation.
