“Crisis Containment: A New Quality of Disorder in the Middle East”

Amman, 13-15 March 2015

The 158th Bergedorf Round Table, which was held in Amman from 13-15 March 2015, took place against the backdrop of an unprecedented level of violence and chaos in the region. The ongoing conflict in Syria with its multiple repercussions on the neighboring countries and the advent of ISIS not only pose major threats to the stability of the region. The consequences are already felt far beyond the Middle East.

40 high-ranking politicians, senior members of the administration and experts from Europe, the United States and the Middle East debated key questions regarding the future of the region. What are the root causes for the success of ISIS and how can it be defeated? Which roles should regional powers, the United States and Europe play in restoring stability and peace? How can the spillover of conflicts to other states in the region be prevented?
