“MYL Around the World – Zoom in on Asia”

In our kick-off event with the Australian Minister for Defence, Linda Reynolds we launched our new digital event series “Munich Young Leaders Around the World”. With a focus on the Indo-Pacific region, the Munich Young Leaders discussed US-China relations, Hong Kong’s national security law, and possibilities for multilateral cooperation in Asia.

At a time of great uncertainty, it is more important than ever to keep up the dialogue and to exchange insights, opinions and ideas. Instead of this year’s Annual Meeting, Körber-Stiftung and the Munich Security Conference are conducting a series of digital events that will allow the Munich Young Leaders Alumni to “virtually travel” the world and to explore how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted multilateral cooperation. Each event will focus on one specific region and scrutinize the state of multilateral cooperation in the wake of the pandemic, highlighting both regional security issues that have been accelerated through the pandemic and those at risk of being overlooked, as countries focus on managing the fallout from COVID-19.

The first digital session had a focus on the Indo-Pacific region. In our kick-off event “MYL Around the World – Zoom in on Asia”, Linda Reynolds, Australia’s Minister for Defence, delivered a short keynote address followed by a discussion with the members of our network. In the second part of the event, the group of Munich Young Leaders gathered in smaller breakout sessions to discuss US-China relations and its impact on smaller Asian countries, India’s role in promoting multilateral solutions to security challenges in the region, and Hong Kong’s national security law.
