Political Background Discussion with Michael Rühle

Berlin, March 5, 2009

Michael Rühle, Head, Speechwriting and Senior Policy Adviser at the Policy Planning Unit of the NATO Secretary General, discussed the main theses of his essay on German nuclear weapons policy (“Gute und schlechte Atombomben – Berlin muss die nukleare Realität mitgestalten“) which will be published in the “Standpunkte” series of edition Körber Foundation in March, with Members of the German Bundestag, representatives of the Federal Foreign Office, the Federal Chancellery as well as selected think tanks.

The discussion with Michael Rühle continues the tradition of dealing with security policy issues at Körber Foundation. This series has included the Political Background Discussion with Lieutenant General Henry A. Trey Obering III, Director at the Missile Defence Agency of United States Air Force, Lieutenant General Karl W. Eikenberry, Deputy Chairman of the NATO Military Committee as well as the 138th Bergedorf Round Table on the topic “Can the EU Ensure Europe’s Security?”(Warsaw 2007) and the 140th Bergedorf Round Table on the topic “The Future of NATO” (Berlin 2008).

Körber Foundation regularly invites a small circle of high-ranking actors within Berlin’s foreign policy community to its Political Background Discussions. As in the Bergedorf Round Tables, the discussions take place shielded from the public, so as to enable a confidential, frank, and constructive exchange.
