Jan Hamáček, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, met with members of the German Bundestag, representatives of the Federal Foreign Office, the Federal Ministry of Defense, the Federal Chancellery as well as with associates of selected think tanks to discuss the chances and challenges of a common European foreign and security policy. In addition, the discussion focused on the assessment of the Czech EU Presidency as well as on current trends in Nato-Russia relations.
The Political Background Discussion with Jan Hamáček continues Körber Foundation’s tradition of dealing with issues of European foreign and security policy. This series has included the Political Background Discussions and Political Breakfasts with Krzysztof Lisek, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland, Helga Schmid, Head of the Political Staff of the High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy and Secretary General of the EU Council, and Michel Miraillet, Director of the Department for Strategic Affairs at the French Ministry of Defense, as well as the 138th Bergedorf Round Table on “Can the EU Ensure Europe’s Security?” (Warsaw 2007).
Körber Foundation regularly invites a small circle of high-ranking actors within Berlin’s foreign policy community to its Political Background Discussions. As in the Bergedorf Round Tables, the discussions take place shielded from the public, so as to enable a confidential, frank, and constructive exchange.
