H.E. Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Albusaidi, Secretary General, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Sultanate of Oman met with members of the German Bundestag, representatives of federal ministries, government agencies and selected think tanks to discuss current security and energy issues in the Gulf region. The discussion focused on the conflict over the Iranian nuclear program
In his opening statement Sayyid Badr emphasized that the maintenance of security and stability was one of the greatest challenges confronting the Gulf region. The Sultanate of Oman had adopted a very pragmatic approach to this issue. Security and stability could be attained only through cooperation and by conducting a dialogue with its neighbours in the region.
In the ensuing discussion Sayyid Badr pointed out that in order to create an atmosphere of mutual trust it was important to integrate Iran instead of isolating it. Oman also maintained good neighbourly relations with Yemen and was trying to help to stabilize its neighbour. Furthermore, a cooperative approach to the restoration of functioning government structures in Somalia was needed in order to resolve the problem of piracy on a permanent basis.
Körber Foundation regularly invites a small circle of high-ranking actors within Berlin’s foreign policy community to its Political Background Discussions. As in the Bergedorf Round Tables, the discussions take place shielded from the public, so as to enable a confidential, frank, and constructive exchange.
