Political Background Discussion with H.E. Mohammad Bagher Khorramshad

Berlin, April 15, 2010

H.E. Dr. Mohammad Bagher Khorramshad, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic Iran, met with members of the German Bundestag, representatives of federal ministries, government agencies and selected think tanks to discuss the future perspectives of EU-Iran relations. The discussion focused, among other aspects, on Iran’s nuclear program and possible further sanctions.

In his opening statement Khorramshad deplored the current lull in European-Iranian relations and put part of the blame on the influence of the US on European politics. He emphasized that Iran wanted a positive partnership with the EU based on mutual respect, and for this reason suggested that the two sides should concentrate on cooperation in areas where they had common interests, such as Afghanistan. In the ensuing discussion the participants agreed with Khorramshad that improved relations were desirable. However, they rejected his interpretation of European politics and the conflict caused by the Iranian nuclear programme.

The Political Background Discussion continues Körber Foundation’s tradition of dialogue with Iranian representatives. This series includes the Background Discussion with H.E. Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Gholam Hossein Nozari, Minister of Petroleum of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Amir Mohebbian, Member of the Board and Political Editor of Resalat Daily Newspaper.

Körber Foundation regularly invites a small circle of high-ranking actors within Berlin’s foreign policy community to its Political Background Discussions. As in the Bergedorf Round Tables, the discussions take place shielded from the public, so as to enable a confidential, frank, and constructive exchange.
