Political Background Discussion with Grigol Vashadze

Berlin, June 23, 2010

Grigol Vashadze, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, met with representatives of federal ministries, government agencies and selected think tanks to discuss foreign and security policy challenges Georgia is currently facing. A particular emphasis was placed on the Georgian strategy vis-à-vis South Ossetia and Abkhazia. The role of Turkey in the Southern Caucasus region was also analyzed.

In his opening statement Vashadze pointed out that Georgia had made great strides in the economic and political sphere in recent years. In order to consolidate these achievements there was a particularly pressing need for close cooperation between the EU and NATO. The ensuing discussion centred on Georgia’s relations with neighbouring states. Vashadze stated that the top Georgian foreign policy priority was a fair partnership with all of the country’s neighbours. However, Georgia was not prepared to enter into negotiations on the status of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

Körber Foundation regularly invites a small circle of high-ranking actors within Berlin’s foreign policy community to its Political Background Discussions. As in the Bergedorf Round Tables, the discussions take place shielded from the public, so as to enable a confidential, frank, and constructive exchange.
