Political Breakfast with Admiral James G. Stavridis

Berlin, January 25, 2012

Admiral James G. Stavridis, Supreme Allied Commander, Europe and Commander, United States European Command met in Berlin with Members of the Bundestag, representatives from government agencies and selected think tanks to discuss the transatlantic partnership and 21st Century security.

Describing the current state of global affairs as an era of strategic surprises, the United States sees strategic challenges in the Middle East and Asia Pacific. In the face of these challenges, participants were assured that Europe would remain as the key partner for the US.

On Afghanistan, participants noted that the US-led transition to an Afghan-led coalition is progressing reasonably well. Funding is critical to support Afghan government in stabilising the country after 2014.

Participants also discussed the planned missile defence system in Europe, as well as security challenges in Europe including Kosovo which remained volatile as a result of Serbia ethnic conflicts.

Körber Foundation regularly invites a small circle of high-ranking actors within Berlin’s foreign policy community to its Political Background Discussions. As in the Bergedorf Round Tables, the discussions take place shielded from the public, so as to enable a confidential, frank, and constructive exchange.
