Kaushik Basu, Senior Vice President and Chief Economist of the World Bank, met in Berlin with representatives of government agencies and selected experts. He explained the new goals of the World Bank, (1) to end of extreme poverty and (2) to promote shared prosperity in all countries. Basu underlined the necessity to couple market-oriented ideas with the support of basic rights. Referring to his experience in India he explained that the state has to play an important role in combating extreme poverty as this problem could not be solved by the markets alone.
