Background Discussion with Christopher Murphy and Gregory Meeks

Berlin, 25 November 2013

Senator Christopher Murphy, Member of the United States Senate, and Congressman Gregory Meeks, Member of the U.S. House of Representatives, met in Berlin with Members of the German Bundestag and representatives of government agencies. Senator Murphy emphasized that the United States have to make sure that surveillance is being done under rules on which both sides can agree. Congressman Meeks said that the United States have learned that they cannot protect themselves by themselves. He underlined that security can only be achieved in close cooperation with other nations.

Körber Foundation regularly invites a small circle of high-ranking actors within Berlin’s foreign policy community to its Political Background Discussions. As in the Bergedorf Round Tables, the discussions take place shielded from the public, so as to enable a confidential, frank, and constructive exchange.
