Background Discussion with Brahma Chellaney

Berlin, 19 March 2014

Brahma Chellaney, Professor of Strategic Studies at the Center for Policy Research in New Delhi, met in Berlin with Members of the German Bundestag, representatives of the Federal Foreign Office and selected experts to discuss the security situation in the Indian Ocean and India’s role in the region. He stressed the geopolitical importance of the Indian Ocean as a bridge between Europe and Asia and the challenges that are posed by extremism, piracy, and competition for resources in the region. He placed an emphasis on India’s relations with Afghanistan, Iran, and Pakistan as well as its relationship with China.

Körber Foundation regularly invites a small circle of high-ranking actors within Berlin’s foreign policy community to its Political Background Discussions. As in the Bergedorf Round Tables, the discussions take place shielded from the public, so as to enable a confidential, frank, and constructive exchange.
