Background Discussion with Alexey Pushkov

Berlin, 10 December 2015

Alexey Pushkov, Member of the Russian State Duma and Head of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, discussed Russia’s role in Syria and the current state of the conflict in Ukraine with Members of the German Bundestag, representatives of government agencies and selected experts from German Think Tanks. Russia’s primary objective is fighting IS, stated the Russian guest. Only a united coalition of international actors with the help of moderate regional forces could successfully stop IS from further expanding. According to Mr. Pushkov at this point of time only the Free Syrian Army and the Kurdish Peshmerga have the capacity to do so. Regarding the Ukraine conflict Pushkov strongly supported a quick implementation of the Minsk-II-agreement. Russia and Europe should agree on concrete fields of mutual interest for future cooperation.

Körber Foundation regularly invites a small circle of high-ranking actors within Berlin’s foreign policy community to its Political Background Discussions. As in the Bergedorf Round Tables, the discussions take place shielded from the public, so as to enable a confidential, frank, and constructive exchange.
