Background Discussion with Daniel R. Russel

Berlin, 23 March 2016

Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs of the U.S. State Department, Daniel R. Russel, met in Berlin with Members of the German Bundestag, representatives from government agencies and Berlin-based think tanks to talk about the foreign policy goals and priorities of the Obama administration in East Asia and the Pacific region. He explained the background behind the U.S.-led “Pivot to Asia” and stressed that this turn to the East does not imply a turn away from Europe. He voiced his concerns about the development of the conflict in the South China Sea and called for a strong European voice with regard to emphasizing the importance of abiding by international law.

Körber Foundation regularly invites a small circle of high-ranking actors within Berlin’s foreign policy community to its Political Background Discussions. As in the Bergedorf Round Tables, the discussions take place shielded from the public, so as to enable a confidential, frank, and constructive exchange.
