Background Discussion with Mohammad Javad Zarif

Berlin, 27 June 2017

Mohammad Javad Zarif, Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, spoke with Members of the German Bundestag as well as representatives of several ministries and selected think tanks about the current relations between Iran and its neighbors, especially Saudi Arabia, and the Iranian role with regard to the conflicts in the region. Minister Zarif stressed Iran’s willingness for dialogue and the importance of trust-building measures from both Iran and Saudi Arabia. The recent terrorist attacks in the Iranian Parliament and challenges in the implementation of the JCPOA were further topics of the discussion. Minister Zarif argued that Europe underestimated its role and influence and encouraged Europeans to advocate the continuation of the JCPOA even against possible US resistance.

Körber Foundation regularly invites a small circle of high-ranking actors within Berlin’s foreign policy community to its Political Background Discussions. As at the Bergedorf Round Tables, the discussions take place in a confidential setting, so as to enable a frank and constructive exchange.
