Digital Background Discussion with Thomas Rose

Berlin, 12 May 2020

The coronavirus crisis is transforming the international system and has accelerated existing trends towards de-globalisation and a further erosion of multilateral cooperation. With its new series of “Digital Background Discussions”, Körber-Stiftung aims to facilitate a digital exchange about current challenges for foreign and security policy – including, but not limited to, the consequences of the coronavirus crisis.

On 12 May 2020, as part of the “Digital Background Discussion“ series, Körber-Stiftung welcomed Thomas Rose, Senior Advisor und Chief Strategist to US Vice President Mike Pence. Mr. Rose conversed with members of the German Bundestag, representatives of German ministries and experts from selected think tanks about the Coronavirus crisis, its economic consequences and emerging trends in international politics.

The US and Europe – A Resilient Partnership?

The particular relevance of a stable transatlantic partnership during the crisis was highlighted in the discussion. Participants from both sides of the Atlantic underlined the importance of further developing this relationship in a cooperative manner, based on common values. Against this background, specific policy issues, such as the level of European defence spending, were discussed in a constructive manner.

The Future Relationship Between China and the West – An Example For Global Decoupling?

In addition to the transatlantic relationship, participants also debated about future relations between China and the West. In addition to the different strategies of China and the US relating to crisis communication and ways of handling the pandemic, the discussion also touched upon the necessity of international cooperation in the context of economic development.

The “Digital Background Discussion” Series – Continuing Dialogue in Times of Crisis

Körber-Stiftung regularly invites a small circle of high-ranking actors within Berlin’s foreign policy community to its Political Background Discussions. In order to continue our discussions in the digital realm, Körber-Stiftung has initiated a new series, the “Digital Background Discussions”, derived from the Political Background Discussions. With this series, Körber-Stiftung aims to facilitate an exchange about current challenges for foreign and security policy – including, but not limited to, the consequences of the Coronavirus crisis. As at the Bergedorf Round Tables, the discussions take place in a confidential setting, so as to enable a frank and constructive exchange.
