AI and politics

The integration and use of artificial intelligence (AI) in democratic societies requires a differentiated approach. We face a number of challenges when it comes to making AI accessible to all of us. A key factor is ensuring social justice to avoid potential inequalities and active or passive discrimination and data bias through AI. Existing AI systems need to be designed fairly and better adapted to the needs of different age groups and backgrounds.

Disinformation generated or disseminated by AI systems can manipulate public opinion and thus jeopardise the integrity of democratic processes. The regulation of AI and its use of data is therefore of immense importance. A lack of regulation can jeopardise the privacy of citizens and limit democratic control over the use of AI.

Citizen participation in the development of AI technologies should be encouraged. This ensures that the technology fulfils the expectations and needs of society and respects democratic values. In addition to the risks, the integration of AI into democratic systems offers opportunities for increased efficiency and innovation. Ensuring fairness, transparency and democratic control is crucial to preserving democratic values and maximising the benefits of AI in a democratic society.

Democracy is more than just a political system that enables participation. What do we learn from the historical chapters in which we lost our democratic compass and dictatorship, war and violence dominated people’s lives? Artificial intelligence should be understood as a digital archive, which the Körber Foundation would also like to use to track down and provide space for technologies against forgetting to strengthen our democratic culture.
